Another triumph for Bushey Meads – the Gymnastics team this time!
In my last blog I shared my excitement of the ‘Triumph in Tottenham’ which was the success of the Mock Trial Magistrates Court team getting through to the next round of the national competition, which doesn’t take place until after the Easter holidays so more on that in May.
This week I am able to proudly announce ‘Great Achievements by our Gymnastics teams’. On Friday Mrs Cartledge took two teams (U14 and U19) to the new Dolphina Gymnastics Centre in Watford to compete against Hertsmere and Watford Schools. The girls had to perform two vaults and a floor routine. The top four scores of each gymnast were added together to give a final team score.
In the U14 section Bushey Meads sealed a fantastic first place and in the U19 section the girls achieved a very commendable 4th place. All girls showed a high level of skill and determination. We are all very proud of their achievements and thanks go to Mrs Cartledge for supporting the students through this competition.
Other extra-curricular events last week:
At this time of the year of course the older year groups (Years 11-13) are very much focussed on external examination preparation and I am pleased to report that on my visits around the classrooms I see very committed staff and students who are working very hard to make sure they achieve their full potential in those all important exams in the summer.
However, the staff are still finding time to focus on extra-curricular activities for the younger year groups to compliment and balance their academic studies. Examples of activities that were taking place last week are:
Bushey Meads hosted the annual Boccia event for our PNI students on Tuesday. A great time was had by all as always and a big thank you to all the staff involved, especially Mrs Cooper, in making the event such fun for all participating schools. On the same day a group of Year 7 students visited the Annual Hertsmere Youth Conference which is co-ordinated by Mr Newbold, Head of Humanities. This was an all-day event and thoroughly enjoyed by the students involved. Meanwhile that evening Mr Chalkley, Head of DT, assisted by one of our Teaching Assistants, Mr Cox, headed off to Heathrow after school with a team of students to participate in preliminary heats for the British Schools Karting Championship – we will keep you posted on their progress over the coming weeks. All this in one day on top of the normal timetable!
An Enterprise morning was organised for Year 10 on Wednesday, and in the evening MFL staff met with parents in preparation for the Year 8 trip to France in the summer. On Thursday a team of Year 8/9/10 students went to Bushey Academy to participate in the Rotary Problem Solving Challenge, and returned crowned 2014 champions! Well done to Louis Smart, Frazier Mulford-Lawlor, Natalya Smart and Joe Learmonth for their success. In the evening the Year 8/9 TEN Young Chefs Academy took place from 5 – 7pm. Then of course on Friday we had the Gymnastics competition as reported above.
A typical week in the life of Bushey Meads!
Finally, you will have noticed that I am specifically focussing on Attendance from mentions in previous Headlines. I am very pleased to announce that last Thursday (13th March) was our best ever achievement of attendance levels, and KS5 recorded 100% attendance. Thank you to the parent body for supporting us in raising our attendance levels to this standard – let’s hope I can report more of this on a weekly basis!
