Equality and Diversity

Alignment with Equality Legislation

Bushey Meads School is committed to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, as defined within the Equality Act (2010).

The Act’s ten ‘Protected Characteristics’ includes:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Race & Ethnicity
  • Pregnancy, Maternity & Paternity
  • Sex
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Gender Identity & Reassignment
  • Religion or Beliefs
  • Marriage & Civil Partnership

We are committed to:

  • Eliminating prohibited discrimination based on protected characteristics;

  • Advancing equality of opportunity between individuals who share protected characteristics and those who do not;

  • Fostering positive relationships across diverse groups.

These values are embedded within our policies, pastoral systems, curriculum, and community ethos.

Aims and Values

Rooted in our school mantra “Aspire to Achieve”, and guided by our 3Rs—Respect, Responsibility & Relationships—alongside our “Mind to be Kind” ethos, we commit to ensuring that every student and staff member:

  • Feels represented, supported, and able to fully participate in school life;

  • Benefits from a broad, culturally rich curriculum that reflects and respects a range of voices and experiences;

  • Becomes a confident, compassionate, and culturally aware citizen of our school and wider society.
Strategic diversity, equality and Inclusion Objectives
  1. Inclusive, responsive curriculum
    We aim for our curriculum to be accessible and engaging for all learners—tailored to individual needs and embedding diverse perspectives across subjects.

  2. Positive pastoral culture
    Through our shared values and “Mind to be Kind” mantra, we nurture a caring environment with effective support systems.

  3. Proactive diversity, equality and Inclusion leadership and representation

    • We actively engage families through forums such as parent diversity groups—initiated in response to diversity, equality and Inclusion discussions, including Black History Month and anti-racism dialogues.

    • Students’ voices lead diversity, equality and Inclusion efforts through new steering groups that inform policy and school culture.

  4. Support for Additional Needs
    All students, including those with SEND, are fully integrated into the curriculum. Tailored academic support is coordinated by our Learning Support team to ensure equality of opportunity.

Awareness-building via school life and assemblies
Themes of Equality, Diversity, and respect for Protected Characteristics are consistently integrated into assemblies and leadership messages—reinforcing our 3Rs and inclusive ethos.

Our diversity, equality and Inclusion Framework

Our diversity, equality and Inclusion commitments are woven across multiple tiers of school life:

  • Governance & Policy
    Equality and inclusion are embedded across our strategic documents, behaviour policies, and SEND framework, ensuring both compliance and accountability.

  • Leadership & Coordination
    The Senior Leadership Team ensures diversity, equality and Inclusion considerations are incorporated across policies, curriculum planning, staff training, and family engagement initiatives.

  • Staff Empowerment
    Through assemblies, CPD, and regular diversity, equality and inclusion-focused messaging, staff are equipped to model inclusion, address bias, and nurture respectful environments.

  • Student Leadership & Voice
    diversity, equality and Inclusion student groups co-design initiatives, provide feedback, and help shape school culture. Assembly themes and curriculum development benefit from student insights.

  • Family & Community Engagement
    Our diversity steering group of parents works alongside staff to guide inclusive practice and ensure the school remains attentive to community needs.
