Executive Principal’s Blog – 6.6.25 ’An 80-day Ofsted Update’

It has now been 80 working days since the school’s Ofsted inspection visit in January. On Monday evening of this week, at a joint Senior Leadership Team and Governors meeting it was encouraging to reflect back over the last 80 days and consider how much has already been achieved by leaders at all levels.

Whilst the Ofsted report (which we received in April) aligned with areas of school improvement already identified in the School Improvement Plan, the comments made in the report referenced below certainly added an additional impetus to the trajectory of travel. In terms of an update:

Ofsted commented that: “Some pupils’ behaviour disrupts learning across parts of the school……….
the school should ensure its behaviour system is implemented consistently well so pupils’ behaviour improves and learning is not disrupted.”

With that in mind leaders across the school have been working extremely hard to support:
  1. A more consistent application of the School’s Behaviour Policy.
  2. More effective handling of pockets of challenging behaviour.
Ofsted commented that: “It is too often the case that disadvantaged pupils are persistently absent……………the school should establish an effective strategy for improving the attendance of this group of pupils.”

With that in mind all staff have been making every effort to:
  1. Increase attendance for all pupils.
  2. Maintain a specific focus on pupil premium attendance.
Ofsted commented that: “Sometimes, teachers do not effectively check pupils’ knowledge and understanding………..The school should ensure that staff have the necessary support to consistently implement the curriculum well.”

In this area the school has continued to enhance the plans in place to:
  1. Improve recruitment and retention and proactively identify ways to reduce cover/staff absence.
  2. Ensure staff training takes place to embed prompt and effective assessment for learning in lessons.
  3. Support further adaptations to lesson delivery for SEND students.
In addition to the key areas above, leaders have also been working extremely hard to create a genuine spirit of collaboration and transparency to inspire confidence through:
  1. Genuine opportunities for involvement by all stakeholders and a renewed focus on improved communication with parents.
  2. Establishing even more efficient working practices in key areas.
I would like to thank all the parents who attended the parental engagement meetings during the Spring term; over 100 of you played your part in this journey. In addition, a huge thank you goes to all the hardworking staff who have contributed so much to the additional working parties and staff training events that have taken place since the inspection.

The 9 key areas highlighted above reflect a huge amount of hard work and sustained energy which has created a very positive momentum for moving forward into next year and beyond. As a school we are fully staffed for September and have strengthened a number of key teams including our Pastoral and Cover Supervisor Teams which will add additional capacity to the ongoing journey.

As parents and carers your encouragement has been invaluable and as a school we would like to thank you for your continued support. As always don’t forget to click on the link and enjoy reading more of this week’s BMS News……..
