Executive Principal’s Blog – 17.5.24: ‘Exemplary Role Model at BMS’

This week it was a real privilege to recognize one of our top Year 12 students with the school’s most prestigious award – a Chair of Governor’s Award. The award is worth 30 Achievement Points and was given to Luke in 12 Beech for ‘exceptional bravery and selflessness in expertly supporting with a medical emergency in the local community’.

The situation arose as Luke was leaving his house and witnessed a distressed young woman screaming for help to support her son who was choking. Although Luke could see that another adult had stopped to support, he was able to see that the man was not performing the first aid actions correctly. This was mainly due to him being a long serving RAF Cadets and, not just being First Aid qualified himself, but also a First Aid Trainer.

In the potentially stressful situation Luke showed no hesitation in putting his training into practice; he swiftly went over to support and performed the Heimlich maneuver, five times. Luke’s professionalism, skill and calm nature assisted the young man to be able to cough up the food he had been choking on, causing the woman to call for an ambulance. The mother was so grateful; had it not been for Luke she said she was in total distress and the situation could have ended in a horrible state of affairs.

As a school we want to commend Luke for, not only thinking on his feet, or for putting his training into practice, but for his bravery and selflessness to help and support a member of the public in a very stressful situation. He will receive a prestigious certificate and the award will also be acknowledged at our upcoming Rewards Ceremony at 6.00 p.m. on Thursday 4th July 2024. Luke truly epitomises everything our school ethos and culture stands for.

As we continue to work hard to improve our school and ensure all our students Aspire to Achieve, I would like to thank all our parents and carers for being part of our ongoing journey.
