Mental Health of students and staff is one of our top priorities at Bushey Meads School.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Mental health sessions are embedded throughout our PSHE curriculum and Theme of the Week schedule. We aim to keep maintaining positive mental health an ongoing conversation in school.
Ms Greenwood, Assistant Headteacher is the school’s Senior Mental Health Lead. We have two qualified counsellors who work alongside the pastoral team. Within the SEND and pastoral team we have staff that have been trained in Mental Health First Aid.
The school has just been awarded the Bronze Mental Health Champion School Award that recognises our outstanding commitment to pupil empowerment, wellbeing and early intervention.
Students can apply to train to be Mental Health Champions. During their training they look at their own mental health and the skills and qualities needed to be a mental health champion. They then learn about the four stages of mental health; healthy, unsettled, struggling and unwell.Once students have graduated the programme they run a lunch time drop in club ‘Worry Free Wednesdays’ and are a visible presence around the school. They work hard designing activities for students promoting positive mental health and signposting where they can get help if they are worried.
