Robust Vocabulary Instruction

At BMS, we use robust vocabulary instruction to develop studentsā€™ knowledge of vocabulary. Robust vocabulary instruction helps children learn new words in a deep and meaningful way. Instead of just memorising definitions, it encourages students to explore words through engaging activities, discussions, and connections to their own experiences.

Key Features of Robust Vocabulary Instruction:Ā

Rich Context: Words are taught in context, so kids understand how to use them in sentences and conversations.

Multiple Exposures: Students encounter new words several times in different settings, which helps them remember and use them.

Active Engagement: Activities like games, storytelling, and discussions make learning fun and interactive.

Connections: Students learn to relate new words to words they already know, which builds a stronger vocabulary network.

Variety of Words: The focus is on teaching important, high-use (Tier 2) words that they can use in everyday life, not just those found in their textbooks.

By using robust vocabulary instruction, children become more confident speakers and writers, helping them succeed in school and beyond!

We focus explicitly on teaching Tier 2 and Tier 3 words
Each week there is a whole school vocabulary focus. This year we are focusing on word roots to build studentsā€™ vocabulary network .
