Bushey Meads News

This week it was a real privilege to welcome Rachel Macfarlane, Director of Education Services for Herts for Learning to Bushey Meads School. She was very generous with her time, spent nearly two hours at our school and really enjoyed meeting so many inspirational staff and students.

She was particularly interested in the school’s rapid improvement in results in many areas, most notably with the core subjects of English and maths (now enabling nearly 90% of students to achieve a C+/Level 4+ at GCSE) and the increasing numbers of students studying these subjects at Post 16, as well as the huge rise in our science results (indicating a nearly 20% increase in the percentage of students achieving two good science GSCEs).

Probably the highlight of her visit however was meeting so many student leaders across all curriculum areas who were so willing to explaining what they were learning in lessons. She also spent some time with a specific group of leaders from across all year groups including Rikil our superb Head Boy who chaired a meeting with her to outline their roles and the impact they are all having in improving our learning community here at BMS.

Her visit ended with her meeting the Headteachers of the primary schools in our Trust – Hartsbourne and Little Reddings Primary Schools whereby she gained an insight into the innovative approach we are taking to improving the learning journey of our students from Early Years to Year 13 and the strongly collaborative approach to our professional development programme for staff in the Bushey St James Trust.

Her comment in our visitor book at the end of her time with us said it all. We look forward to continuing building the positive links with Herts for Learning over the coming years, being able to share and gain best practice from the many other outstanding schools in the county.

I had a really uplifting visit. What articulate, confident and happy students!
